Mainstream Medical Researchers Validate Importance of Glycoscience
Scientists have discovered many health benefits related to the study of glycoscience or glycomics (smart sugars). The opening of a new virtual educational effort will be used by healthcare professionals and the general public worldwide. This project is in response to a recent development by major US Government agencies that recognize the benefits of specific beneficial sugars.
The US Government agencies assembled a stellar group of glycoscientists who formed a committee to develop the roadmap for the future of glycomics. The project title is Transforming Glycoscience.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Academy of Sciences, the National Research Council, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and the US Department of Energy ) have formed a committee to evaluate the importance, impact, and future of glycoscience. The group was charged to "articulate a unified vision for the field on glycoscience and glycomics" and to "develop a roadmap with concrete research goals to significantly advance the field".
The new virtual education center was launched by a non-profit public charity as an easy way for accessing information about the latest research in the science of beneficial sugars. From their website, readers will see an astounding close-up picture of glycoprotein receptor sites on the surface of a red blood cell. These fuzzy structures on the surface of every cell in the human body determine the method of communication between the cells. This is how human cells actually talk to each other!
The public charity will report on the work of the committee, ongoing glycomics research around the world, and keep readers informed with an easy-to-understand format. Its mission is to make it simple for the public to understand glycoscience that may prove to be thousands of times more complex than the genome project.
The project has the potential to transform the field of glycoscience which in turn can literally transform basically all of science in a powerful way. Glycoscience has the potential to dramatically impact many sciences.
Polysaccharides encompass all of biology. The smart sugars effect all life: plant, animal, and human. My conviction is that glycosylation (attachment of sugars to other molecules) is what gives a cell LIFE. Scientist agree that without these sugars, there is no sustaining life.
Glycomics may hold the key to health, longevity, and anti-aging nutrition. Scientists agree that the key to health diagnostics' Gold Standard is to monitor the glycoprotein receptor sites on the surface of cells.
Science will benefit from glycoscience in many fields for the rest of time. The next few decades will reveal astounding opportunities to benefit human health and potentially lower healthcare costs. MIT was right, this science will change the way we live.
